Reflections on a Magical Holiday Adventure

As the holiday season winds down and the new year unfolds, I find myself reflecting on the moments that brought light and joy to our community this past year. Among all the wonderful experiences, our Holiday Trip Around the World at EPCOT stands out as a highlight.

In early December, families and friends from our homeschool collective came together for a day of learning, laughter, and connection. For many of us it was our first time to see the EPCOT storytellers, while others enjoyed sharing this yearly family tradition with our community. The magic of the season was found at every stop, and while words can’t quite capture the spirit of the day, here’s a glimpse into our festive journey...

Stop 1: Mexico – Las Posadas Celebration

We kicked off our trip with the vibrant sights and sounds of Las Posadas in the Mexico Pavilion. Mariachi Cobre serenaded us as graceful dancers twirled, their colorful skirts swirling to the rhythm of the music. We listened to the beautiful story of Las Posadas, which re-enacts Mary and Joseph's search for shelter. It was a touching reminder of the importance of hospitality and community. Bonus? We got to reconnect with our old friend Joe—an extra spark of joy to start the day!

Stop 2: Norway – The Magical Barn Santa

Next, we found ourselves charmed by the mischievous Barn Santa in Norway. With a twinkle in his eye and plenty of humor, he joined Sigrid to share Scandinavian holiday traditions rooted in rural life. The kids were mesmerized, and the adults were laughing right along with them—an instant favorite for all ages.

Stop 3: China – Lunar New Year Celebration

In China, the Si-Zhu Trio transported us with their delicate yet powerful music. They shared the story behind the Lunar New Year celebrations, introducing us to the instruments used during this special time of renewal. The combination of new songs and familiar favorites made this stop both educational and enchanting.

Stop 4: Germany – Holiday Fanfare

Our visit to Germany included an impromptu performance by Tanzhaus Johann. The lively brass band filled the air with festive tunes that reflected the warmth and cheer of German holiday traditions. We couldn’t help but tap our feet and clap along to the beat!

Stop 5: Italy – The Tale of La Befana

La Befana, the kind-hearted Christmas witch of Italian folklore, captivated us in Italy. She shared her story of the Three Wise Men and her journey to find Gesù Bambino. Her tale of hope, generosity, and childlike wonder resonated deeply with all of us.

Stop 6: Japan – Darumas and New Year Traditions

In Japan, we learned about the symbolic Daruma dolls and their connection to setting goals for the new year. Our storyteller explained traditions like eating longevity noodles and painting one eye on the Daruma to represent a wish. This stop was a fun way to honor the theme of fresh beginnings.

Stop 7: The American Adventure – Caroling with Voices of Liberty

The Voices of Liberty, transformed into the Dickens Carolers, filled the American Adventure Pavilion with their breathtaking harmonies. Their renditions of classic holiday carols gave us all goosebumps and brought a sense of nostalgia and unity to the group.

Stop 8: Celebrating Hanukkah

We were treated to a heartfelt storytelling session about Hanukkah, featuring songs and traditions from around the world. One of our students was even put on the spot and asked to play a song on the storyteller’s guitar!

Stop 9: France – Père Noël and the Magic of Christmas

In France, Père Noël shared a heartwarming tale about little Babette and the power of believing. Under the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, we were reminded of the simple joys that make the holidays special.

Stop 10: United Kingdom – Father Christmas

Father Christmas delighted us in the UK Pavilion with his wit and wisdom. He explained how many beloved carols originated in the United Kingdom, and his jovial nature kept everyone laughing and singing along. One of our drama club students even joined the performance!

Last Stop: Canada – A Festive Grand Finale

We ended our journey in Canada, where the Canadian Holiday Voyageurs took us on a musical tour of traditions. The kids danced their hearts out while the band played - it was the perfect conclusion to our day.

As I look back on this adventure, I’m filled with gratitude for the memories we made and the bonds we strengthened. This trip wasn’t just about exploring the holiday traditions of different cultures; it was about coming together as a community to celebrate the shared spirit of joy and connection.

Stepping into the new year, I can’t wait for more moments like this—adventures that spark curiosity, foster learning, and remind us of the beauty in our diversity. Here's to more magic and togetherness in 2025!

Happy New Year!
