This month, Radiant Learning Collective took a deep dive into the rich traditions and beauty of Japan, blending hands-on learning with an unforgettable field trip to EPCOT's Japan Pavilion. From geography to art, poetry, and even culinary experiences, the kids had countless opportunities to connect with Japanese culture. Here's a look at our journey!
A Day at the Japan Pavilion
Our adventure began at EPCOT, where we met under the iconic Torii Gate. The kids kicked off the day with kanji practice, learning to draw simple Japanese characters while marveling at the stunning red gate and its reflection over the lagoon.
Next, we embarked on a walking architectural tour of the pavilion, exploring the inspiration behind the towering pagoda, the castle walls, and the koi pond. Our guide explained how traditional Japanese architecture often incorporates elements of nature, blending the outdoors and indoors in a harmonious way.
The pavilion’s lush gardens became the perfect setting for a haiku-writing session. Surrounded by vibrant greenery and peaceful water features, the kids let their creativity flow, crafting short, thoughtful poems inspired by nature.
A stop at the KIDCOT station came next, where our student Ava interviewed a local Cast Member. Her thoughtful questions gave us a deeper understanding of Japanese culture, and her interview will be featured in our next podcast episode, RADcast: Radiant Around the World.
The Bijutsu-kan Gallery was a highlight for many, featuring a Puzzle Hunt and a custom crossword puzzle created by Coach J. The activity was inspired by kawaii (cute) characters, making it both educational and fun for the kids to explore this beloved aspect of Japanese pop culture.
One of the most awe-inspiring moments of the trip was watching the Matsuriza Taiko drummers perform. The rhythmic beats and high-energy choreography captivated everyone in the crowd, leaving us inspired for another round of haiku writing afterward. With the performance fresh in their minds, the kids’ poetry reflected the powerful rhythms and dynamic energy of the drums.
We wrapped up the day with a family scavenger hunt around the pavilion, uncovering small cultural details and hidden gems. Finally, we gathered for reflection, sharing favorite moments over a delicious meal of Japanese cuisine.
Learning Japan at Radiant
Our month of Japanese studies at Radiant brought culture to life in countless ways. The kids explored geography through maps and created zen gardens filled with miniature rakes, rocks, and sand. They designed vibrant koi fish flags in art and even practiced traditional Japanese woodblock printing.
One special highlight was a Japanese tea ceremony, where the kids whisked matcha powder tea with bamboo whisks and learned about the etiquette of this time-honored practice. We also practiced writing kanji, blending art and language into one creative exercise.
Haikus remained a favorite activity throughout the month, as the kids refined their ability to capture big ideas in three simple lines. Their poems reflected themes of nature, peace, and beauty—values deeply rooted in Japanese culture.
A Cultural Adventure to Remember
Our studies of Japan offered a blend of creativity, mindfulness, and hands-on exploration. The kids didn’t just learn about Japan; they experienced it in a meaningful way—through art, poetry, traditions, and stories.
